the daughter diaries
last year my dad started this thing called “the daughter diaries”
via email me, macey and amanda get updates periodically of family history, cool stories my dad knows and just advice or wisdom he thinks we need or will need.
this morning we got one about how he got his middle name:
“Dad worked for the Indiana State Highway Dept along with Paul Swanner back in the 60’s. They mowed and all that stuff those guys do. The state decided to run a new interstate through and called it I-69. Dad got a chance to work on the interstate as a surveyor in training. His section he worked was just north of Marion. He would collect soil samples etc too. Ever notice there is always a lake near the overpasses? Well that’s where they got the dirt to build them. I didn’t used to know that. Also they couldn’t just run the interstate straight but had to put curves in it on purpose, at least every 5 miles so as not to be too boring for the drivers. That was a side note he told me a long time ago. :)
Anyways, Dad worked with a black guy and they became good friends. One day they were in a restaurant and they didnt want to serve Dad’s friend because of him being black. Dad got mad, slammed his fist on the table and said, If you can’t serve my friend here then you ain’t serving me either! A few expressed explicitives later they both left! The year was 1965. The mans name, Calridge Lanier Brewer. I was born and received his middle name.”
I love getting these emails!the things i learn or just family things that have helped shape my sisters; they leave a mark dad.
plus my dad is just pretty much the best.
